According to the U.S. State Department, it is estimated as many as 27 million people around the world are victims of modern slavery. “Those victims of modern slavery are women and men, girls and boys, and their stories remind us of the kind of inhumane treatment we are capable of as human beings,” said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “Whatever their background, they are the living, breathing reminders that the work to eradicate slavery remains unfinished.”
While literally thousands of people are trafficked every year in the United States, human trafficking is no more just an isolated international problem. Now it is something we are dealing with right here in our backyards. As a church, we also want to play our role in raising awareness and funds in the fight against human trafficking. We have formed a committee called, “Stop The Traffick Campaign”, to combat this injustice that is growing more and more each year. Our vision is two-fold: (1) to rescue and restore hope to the victims of this injustice, and (2) to support the men and women who are on the front lines, tirelessly, working to end this evil.
In order to accomplish this we will be using various fund-raisers to generate the funds needed to fight this problem. The largest of these is our annual “Stop The Traffick” 5 K run/walk for which we seek participation from local businesses, churches, and individuals. The information about this and other events will be posted on our website. We invite you to get involved by participating or by donating toward this cause. Finances received will go to the ministries directly involved in rescuing people from human trafficking. So far we have supported ON Eagles Wings Ministries (www.oewm.net) that has Hope Houses in several cities of North Carolina providing a safe place for victims of human trafficking. We also support the Dream Center in LA (www.dreamcenter.org) that also helps rescue people from this horrible bondage. Internationally we are involved with Calcutta Mercy Ministries and Buntain Foundation (www.buntain.org) that lead a great effort in combating human trafficking in India which is considered to be one of the strongholds of this dark but growing business.
